A local student from Dukinfield has won a coveted prize after his school – The Manchester Grammar School – entered him into the 6th National Russian Essay Competition.

17-year-old James Martin, fought off competition from 400 students from around the UK to win the 1st prize at his level. A further six pupils from MGS also picked up prizes from the competition, in which they had to prepare essays in Russian on the country’s culture.
 
Speaking of his success, James said: I’m delighted to have won this award and to be part of a great team of successful entrants from MGS. Russian is challenging but its great to be able to apply it at length to something like this. My essay was on Russian and British superstitions and it was a topic I was able to elaborate on.
 
Three boys, including James picked up the first prizes in their categories, with the other pupils picking up second and third prizes. A special award was given to Pravar Petkar from the school for his thorough subject research.

Added Ludmilla Speed, who is the Russian teacher at MGS: I’m so proud of James and of all the boys. We ensure that as well as the intricacies of the language, the boys are also taught to consume and appreciate Russian culture, and this competition embodied both. I look forward to repeating the success next year!

My essay was on Russian discoveries that have changed the world and it was a topic I was able to elaborate on.
