Chemistry
We aim to stretch our able students beyond the narrow confines of exam specifications.
We have excellent facilities and the subject is delivered with a great deal of hands-on practical experience.
Beyond timetabled lessons there are weekly Chemistry clubs for Middle School and the Sixth Form, where many of the experiments are chosen by the boys themselves. Sixth Formers take a lead role in these activities and a number act as mentors for younger students.
MGS Middle School boys have regularly won the Royal Society of Chemistry's regional ChemQuiz competition and also the national Top of the Bench competition. Sixth Form boys have won the Regional Schools’ Analyst Competition on several occasions.
All of our keen Chemists are invited to take part in the National RSC Chemistry Olympiad and the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge annually and our students consistently achieve top Gold and Roentgenium awards in these respectively. We run an annual trip to ‘A Level Chemistry in Action’ to hear about current research from external speakers and a select team of Sixth formers compete annually in the Cambridge Chemistry Race. University Challenge sessions are offered for those considering pursuing Chemistry further. Our Sixth Formers can also pursue their interest in Chemistry through Philosophical Society, which embraces all three sciences, and features lectures from many leading national figures.
