MGS MHSG WGS netball match MGS MHSG WGS School Captain and Head Girls

On a crisp February evening, pupils from The Manchester Grammar School, Manchester High School for Girls, and Withington Girls’ School came together for a series of fundraising netball matches, demonstrating exceptional teamwork, resilience, and community spirit. The event provided a valuable opportunity for pupils from three of Manchester’s leading schools to collaborate in a friendly yet competitive setting, all in support of a charitable cause. Despite the freezing conditions, enthusiasm remained high as players displayed great skill and sportsmanship on the court, united by a shared commitment to making a positive impact.

This initiative formed part of Withington Girls’ School’s Feel Fab Feb campaign, which encourages pupils to recognise the importance of self-development and well-being. The campaign promotes positive mental and physical health through engaging activities designed to build confidence, resilience, and a sense of community. The matches not only highlighted the sporting abilities of the pupils but also reinforced the significance of cooperation, leadership, and giving back. Events such as these serve as a testament to the strong partnerships between the Manchester schools and their dedication to fostering both individual growth and collective responsibility.

Jack, School Captain at The Manchester Grammar School for 2024-25, spoke about the event: “On Monday 10th February, Sixth Form students from The Manchester Grammar School, Manchester High School for Girls and Withington Girls’ School came together for a thrilling netball event in support of YoungMinds, a leading UK charity committed to improving the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people. Kindly hosted by WGS, the event was a fantastic display of enthusiasm and teamwork. The team of MGS students arrived with high expectations, full of bluster and bravado, but they very quickly found out that their rugby-playing prowess would be of no use – whatsoever – on the netball court! The first match, which featured MHSG and WGS, offered a glimpse of what was to come; played in good spirits, the match was competitive, and it became immediately apparent to the boys that the girls were very skilful in this sport. Next, MGS took on MHSG in what turned out to be a one-sided affair. It was more of the same ritual humiliation in the final game, when MGS played against the hosts, WGS. Amidst the action on the court, WGS organised live music and a tuck shop, which ensured that the lively atmosphere was maintained throughout the event. The fun-filled afternoon not only celebrated sportsmanship, but it also supported an important cause. It was, therefore, an excellent example of how sports can bring people together for a greater purpose. The event also marked the start of WGS’s ‘Feel Fab Feb,’ a month that focuses on mental health education, and this idea provided the perfect backdrop for the netball matches. In line with similar efforts, MGS has recently launched its own wellbeing scheme, which features a wellbeing room and the involvement of Year 13 prefects. These initiatives highlight the growing importance that is being placed on the wellbeing of students at the three schools. I would like to congratulate the players, supporters and organisers, who all played a part in making the event such a success; your efforts have made a real difference, and I look forward to many more collaborative events that continue to bring our schools together for goods causes.”

Eva, Head Girl at Manchester High School for Girls, said: “On Monday, 10th February, our Sixth From students had the privilege of participating in a charity netball match at WGS, alongside teams from MGS and WGS. The event was held to raise funds and awareness for Young Minds, a charity dedicated to supporting young people’s mental health, a cause that perfectly aligns with our school’s core value of Well-Being. At MHSG, we believe in nurturing the mental, emotional, and physical health of our students, and this event highlighted how sports and community efforts can come together to support such important initiatives. The match was a wonderful showcase of talent, sportsmanship, and teamwork, with players from all three schools delivering amazing performances. The energy on the court was infectious, and it was inspiring to see everyone giving their best for such a meaningful cause. Alongside the match, the event also featured an incredible performance from a band of WGS students, adding a lively and entertaining touch to the evening. The music kept spirits high, creating a vibrant atmosphere that made the event all the more memorable. Thanks to everyone’s generosity and participation, the event raised significant funds for Young Minds. We are proud of the collective effort from MHSG, MGS, and WGS, and look forward to continuing to support such impactful causes in the future.”

Head Girl from Withington Girls’ School Arabella said: “The charity netball match at WGS was a fantastic success, bringing together students, staff, and supporters for an evening of sport, music, and fundraising in aid of YoungMinds. The atmosphere was high-spirited, with an incredible turnout and a shared passion for the cause. A huge thank you to MGS for not only joining us on the court but also bringing along their beloved mascot, who added an extra dose of fun and energy to the game. The match itself was full of competitive spirit, teamwork, and plenty of laughter—all in the name of raising awareness and funds for children’s mental health. Off the court, the entertainment continued with a brilliant musical performance from our very own Calista, Frank, and Zara. Their talent kept spirits high and added to the celebratory mood of the evening. Most excitingly, YoungMinds themselves responded to our post, showing just how impactful our efforts were. In total, we raised an impressive £281—a testament to the generosity and enthusiasm of everyone involved. Thank you to all who played, cheered, and donated. Together, we’ve made a real difference, and we look forward to maintaining this yearly tradition in the future!”
