LGBTQ+ Dinner 2025

LGBTQ+ dinner 2

On Saturday 1st March, the MGS LGBTQ+ Society hosted its annual dinner, welcoming a diverse group of attendees, including teaching staff, current pupils, and alumni. The evening commenced with a reception in the theatre foyer, where guests enjoyed drinks and canapés, accompanied by a piano performance from Sixth Form pupil Giles, setting an elegant tone for the night.

Following the reception, attendees gathered for a meal in DR1, prepared by Richard Palombellaa and the school's catering team. After dinner, the evening featured a series of addresses, beginning with a speech from Ms McCarthy, Head of PSHE and LGBTQ+ Lead. They expressed gratitude to the current Sixth Form members for their commitment to maintaining the weekly society meetings and spoke about the importance of solidarity and visibility for minority communities, particularly in the face of contemporary political challenges. As a key advocate for the LGBTQ+ Society since its inception, Ms McCarthy has played an instrumental role in its growth and ongoing success.

The second address came from OM Rafael Sheridan (02-09), who shared his personal experiences at the school in ‘12 Easy Steps’, reflecting on the progress made since his time at MGS. Sheridan, a Senior Economics Producer at BBC News, frequently covers stories for the BBC’s flagship programmes. Outside of his professional life, he is a dedicated Manchester United supporter, an avid reader, and a fourth dan black belt in Shotokan karate. His speech balanced wit and reflection, offering valuable insight into the evolving landscape of inclusivity at the school.

The final address of the evening was delivered by the High Master, Dr Boulton, who highlighted the importance of the LGBTQ+ Society in fostering an inclusive and diverse school community. He commended its continued growth and reaffirmed the school's commitment to ensuring the society remains an integral part of school life.

The evening concluded with an open mic session, during which a current pupil reflected on the speeches and shared their own experience as an LGBTQ+ pupil at MGS. This moment served as a powerful reminder of the school's ongoing journey towards greater inclusivity and the vital role of the LGBTQ+ Society in providing a supportive space for pupils.

The event was both a celebration of the present and a recognition of the school's complex history, reaffirming the importance of visibility and accessibility for future generations. The LGBTQ+ Society  would like to extend sincere thanks to the guest speakers, the catering team, and Jane Graham, the school’s Events Manager, whose efforts were invaluable in orchestrating such a memorable evening.

The MGS LGBTQ+ Society meets weekly and is open to all pupils from year 9 and above: it is primarily pupil-led, featuring member-led presentations and offering a supportive environment for all who attend.
